WWL: The Water We Drink

"There's no such thing as "American" water."  -guest, Charles Duhigg

The Safe Drinking Water Act requires communities nationwide to provide safe drinking water to their residents. But many millions of Americans may still be drinking contaminated water.

There are over 50,000 water systems in the United States and more than 20 percent of them may be violating provisions of the law. Beyond that, many worry that the law itself doesn’t do enough to keep drinking water free from harmful chemicals.

Today, Where We Live, we're joined by Charles Duhigg of the New York Times and Robert Moore of the Metropolitan District Commission to talk about how communities around the country and right here in Connecticut are navigating these tricky waters.

We’ll also take a look at the bottled variety, seen by some as a reliable alternative to tap water, and faulted by others for its costliness and environmental impact. And we’ll try to get a clear answer to the age old question: How much water should we be drinking a day, anyway?
